About Me

Writer, Teacher, and new parent. My first novel, BURNING UNDER, is forthcoming (October 2018) from Stephen F. Austin Univ. Press. Born and and raised in the Rustbelt (Butler, PA), I was the 2017-18 Emerging Writer-in-Residence at Penn State-Altoona. Education: PhD (English) Nebraska-Lincoln and MFA (Fiction) at Univ. of Mississippi, where I studied with Jesmyn Ward, Tom Franklin, Richard Ford, and Chris Offutt. My short fiction and nonfiction publications include Texas Review, Prairie Schooner, and Word Riot, among other journals. My honors and awards include the Frank O’Connor Award (from Descant), Pushcart Prize nomination, Grisham Fellowship (Ole Miss), Finalist – Glimmer Train Very Short Fiction Contest, and Finalist – George Garrett Fiction Prize (Texas Review Press.)  Before pursuing a teaching and writing career, I did legal work in Pittsburgh for a coal mining company, an experience that inspired the subject of my novel.  Presently I live in State College, PA with my wife (Rebecca), toddler son (Hal), and two dogs (Darcy + Woody.)
